Private work on vehicles in Essex Police workshop

Nick Alston, Police and Crime Commissioner for Essex, said:  “In February 2013, I was surprised to learn that there was a long standing practice whereby some Essex Police mechanics would carry out private work on vehicles at the workshop in Boreham, in their own time.  I immediately raised this matter with Chief Officers and an Essex Police Professional Standards Department (PSD) investigation was launched.

“The PSD investigation revealed that the practice had been approved by Chief Officers in 1969, again in 1987, and most recently in 1999.  The investigation did not identify any misconduct issues and revealed that the work of the mechanics was restricted to break times and after work.

“Subsequently, I have referred this matter to the auditors so that they can determine whether any financial issues arise.

“In my judgement, whilst historically this practice may have been approved by Chief Officers, it was no longer appropriate and I have ensured that it stopped.

“It is important that both the Police and Crime Commissioner and Essex Police adhere to the highest standards and that practices are in line with the requirements of a modern police service.  I will continue to work openly with the force to ensure that these standards are met, and that public confidence remains strong.”
