Retirement of Chief Constable BJ Harrington

Following the announcement that Chief Constable BJ Harrington plans to retire, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Roger Hirst MBE said:“I would like to place on record my thanks to BJ for his leadership of Essex Police and for his commitment to policing over more than three decades.
“Since his appointment as Chief Constable in 2018, he has led Essex Police through some of the most serious and complex investigations in recent years, with a clear focus on protecting the public and catching criminals. He has also played a key role nationally through his work with the National Police Chiefs’ Council.
“The investigation following the tragic deaths of 39 people in a lorry in 2019, the demands placed on policing during the pandemic, and a number of significant and high-profile cases required strong and sustained leadership. In each case, Essex Police responded with professionalism and determination, securing justice for victims.
“During his time as Chief Constable, Essex Police has made real progress in bringing more offenders to justice, in line with the priorities set out in our Police and Crime Plan.
“Neighbourhood policing has strengthened its focus on visibility in communities, protecting vulnerable people and working with partners to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour.
“He leaves Essex Police in a strong position for the future.
“I wish BJ and his family all the very best.”
