PFCC statement on Epping protests

Peaceful protest is a fundamental part of our democracy, and we will always support the right of individuals to express their views lawfully and responsibly.
I have today (Tuesday 22nd July 2025) written to the Home Secretary, requesting a meeting to discuss the ongoing use of hotels in the Epping Forest District of Essex to accommodate newly arrived asylum seekers. Specifically, I am seeking clarity around the suitability of venues such as The Bell Hotel in Epping and the Phoenix Hotel in North Weald for this purpose.
The recent protests have heightened the urgency for this discussion.
The presence of asylum seeker accommodation in this district is clearly creating community tension. These large-scale protests are disrupting local life and placing an unsustainable burden on Essex Police resources.
I welcome the clear position from Essex Police - those who protest peacefully, within the law, and with respect for others pose no concern to the force or to the wider public. But I also want to be clear. Criminal violence will never be tolerated under any circumstances. The safety of the public, our officers, and all those involved in lawful protest is paramount.
I will seek to find a solution that protects both the dignity of those seeking asylum and the continued safety of our communities.
