Witham Community Specials celebrate 5 years of volunteering

Witham Town Council Community Special Constables have celebrated five years of serving their community at an event held at Witham Town Hall on Friday 2nd June 2023.

In 2018, Witham Town Council was the first to go live with the Community Special Constables Scheme, funding four Community Specials to target crime and antisocial behaviour in the town.

Five years on the Community Specials have become an important resource in Witham including responding directly to community concerns, holding regular beat surgeries as well as working alongside the Community Policing Team and partners in targeted operations around the area.

Speaking at the event, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex, Roger Hirst said: “I cannot praise highly enough the contribution to community safety the Witham Community Specials have made in the town.  They provide valuable reassurance and engagement to residents and businesses, and in return they are able to dedicate their voluntary service to the area that matters most to them – their community.”

Their five-year celebration coincides with Volunteers Week 2023 and highlights the valuable role volunteers have in making our communities safer. Special Constables volunteer a minimum of 16 hours each month in Witham to target and disrupt anti-social behaviour, respond to community concerns and carry out high visibility foot patrols in the town. Specials have the same full policing powers and uniform as regular police officers.

Are you interested in becoming a Volunteer Police Officer for Essex Police? If so, join Essex Police for a Recruitment Information Evening.
