Children help to raise awareness of Hate Crime

Schoolchildren across the county took part in the fight against hate crime by designing posters to raise awareness about the offences.
Before schools broke up for Christmas, Chief Inspector Natalia Ross, District Commander for Harlow, visited Fawbert & Barnard’s Primary School on London Road to meet the winner and runners up.

The competition, set up by Victim Support, asked school children across the county to take part and had more than 20 entries from seven schools across Harlow, Rochford and Thurrock.
The winning poster, designed by Alex Postolache, will be used to raise awareness of hate crime in schools across Essex and will be used throughout Hate Crime Awareness Week in 2020.
Chief Inspector Ross was joined by PCSO Sharon MacDonald and a representative from Victim Support to present the winner with a giftcard, courtesy of the Office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, and a certificate from the Strategic Hate Crime Prevention Partnership.

Winner Alex was joined by two runners up from his school, Evie Hood and Lilly Russell, who were commended by Chief Inspector Ross.

Chief Inspector Ross said: “It’s was wonderful to meet the kids from Fawbert and Barnard’s and be shown the talent and compassion of young people in our area.
“A huge well done to Alex, Evie and Lilly, and all the other students who took the time to make a poster and raise awareness of these awful offences.”

The competition was organised by Lauren McSpadden, Hate Crime Champion at Victim Support and sponsored by the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex.

Lauren said: “Alex was our winner and his design centred on making Earth a happier place. It was lovely to see the children’s artistic contributions as well as getting feedback from them on hate crime and perceptions of it.”

Roger Hirst, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex, said: “Tackling hate crime is a key priority for me in my Police and Crime Plan for the county. Well done to Alex, Evie and Lilly for coming up with such creative designs and really helping us to promote the campaign.”
